Susan Ruth Cohen is a mixed media artist, working primarily on paper. Her works have been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows from Maine to Hawaii. She holds a B.F.A. from the University of Michigan, and an M.F.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she was a Teaching Fellow in Drawing and Printmaking.

Susan worked on a series of etchings and lithographs at The Printmaking Workshop in NYC and was the recipient of a Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Award. In 1983, she won a prestigious “Workspace” grant from the NY State Council on the Arts to set up a studio space as artist-in-residence at the Jamaica Arts Center in Queens, NY. She frequently opened the doors of her studio to visiting student groups, initiating an informal “visit with the artist” program at the Arts Center. Upon completion of the grant, Susan continued her work with children as an Arts Partners Teaching Artist for NYC school programs. Her extensive work in the arts education field flourished, and now includes over 25 years as an educator and administrator. She was Director of the Youth Arts Project at P.S. 1 in Long Island City, Queens and Project Director of the Arts Education Partnership for After-School & Alternative Programs at Tilles Center, C.W. Post campus of L.I. University. Most recently, Susan was Director of Arts Education at Friends of the Arts (FOTA) and Director of Education & Outreach at Great Neck Arts Center, where she worked in partnership with schools and community organizations throughout Long Island to implement innovative arts-in-education initiatives.

In her works on paper, Susan employs vibrant colors and spontaneous imagery to create a world that is both playful and thought provoking. A writer by habit, Susan often includes written phrases in her artworks, and specifically titles her pieces to reflect her thought process and poetic imagery. Her illustrated poem “Colorsong” began as an independent project, and was completed especially for her 2010 Long Island Children’s Museum exhibition. In 2006, the Children’s Museum was also a source of inspiration, when Susan created a paper sculpture cupcake for the “Cupcakes by Candlelight” LICM benefit.
